(Short story.. How we started with aussies
Just after we were married in 75' living in a small apartment. Boarding our horses a few miles down the road. Jeanne fell in love with a little blue merle ball of fur we named, "Dawn"! A couple months or so went by tying her to a post (the puppy not Jeanne) at Morlock boarding stables in Artesia, Ca. where Jeanne trained horses. One day Dawn managed to free herself from the rope and dashed down the long driveway toward the street. Jeanne screamed watching her puppy excellerate toward the street. (you guessed it no gates) There was nothing Jeanne could do. Tried repeatedly to call her back , to no avail. Luckily Jeanne somehow caught up with her in the nick of time. "I was shaking so bad, it just nearly scared me to death, i could just picture my dog ending up in that street."
My friend Jerrie Potter stabled near me saw everything. Jerrie settled her friend Jeanne down and said something like, dear i think it's time that pup had some training. Jerry told Jeanne she knew a little about training dogs. Jeanne told Jerrie if you'll help me with my puppy i'll help train your horse. After a few months of working with Dawn and Jeanne it was obvious Jerrie knew more than just a little about dog training. Truth be known we found out at one of the dog shows one day that 10 years earlier Jerri (never one to bost about herself) was one of the top obedience handliers in the country showing her star companion German Shepard, Brenda both in the show ring and on National T.V. Well, when Brenda died part of Jerrie died too, she totally lost all desire to show. Coaching Jeanne and giving her lessons rekindled that ole spark again for dog shows in the area she knew best, Obedience. From the get go, Dawn was light years ahead of any other dog in her age group or level. By the end of the year Dawn won most everything she went in winning trophies, cristal, ribbons etc. After 2 years of showing in 20 or so shows Dawns average score in obedience was an amazing 198 (which included 2 perfect 200's. and many 199 1/2's through Utility. Jerrie was at ring side every show, coaching Jeanne and sharpening up Dawn many times way into the night as Dawn would be in the thick of it against older dogs for top honors. Often times would be sharpening Jeanne up.... Dawn (the aussie) already had it down pat! ;-)
Shortly thereafter sadly Jerries husband Roy Potter upon retiring from the house moving business decided to move his family to a farm they purchsed near a town called Goodson north of Springfield, Mo. Today a lifetime later Jerrie Potter has become a respected Austrailan Shepherd Breeder in the mid-west, as many already know. Her breeding program (kennel name, "Butterfield Australian Shepherds", the bottom side of our Aussie breeding program today. Our female, Lee Ann of Butterfield (akc & asca) is out of Jerri's Champion Butterfield bloodlines. Over the last several years Jerrie has teamed up with not only a well known Aussie breeder but also a world class handler in the ring as well, Kym Base from Kansas, U.S.A.
